My Story

Coach Christopher Chong:  Is learning Taekwondo just about level or ranking?

Determination and belief, perseverance and dreams

"Taekwondo" originated in Korea and is considered a national skill in Korea. Among other things, the Tao of Taekwondo refers to the practitioner's spiritual cultivation and correction of the martial art. Taekwondo contains the spirit and wisdom of simple ancient culture, which is about courtesy, justice and honesty, patience and self-restraint, and indomitable. These are often important qualities that young people, especially those raised in the Western world, lack."    -- Christopher Chong, curator

In North Surrey, you can find such a Taekwondo dojo that adheres to the traditional style - JK Taekwondo.

JK Taekwondo Chief Instructor Mr. Christopher Chong, the Deputy National Referee of Taekwondo Canada and Head Coach of Team BC, decided to dedicate himself to passing on the spirit of Taekwondo after winning various awards in international Taekwondo competitions as a young man.

More than 30 years later, Christopher Chong told us that the goal of taekwondo training is not rankings, placings and various titles, but to develop a sense of discipline, patience, mutual respect and team spirit, and to pass on this spirit of perseverance to our next generation, so that the spirit of the fighter will live on like a starburst.

As a result, all parents of JK Taekwondo students have been pleasantly surprised to see a marked change in their children's character, mindset, willpower and teamwork skills.

JK Taekwondo training follows a strict etiquette, from bowing to greeting each other to changing habits.

Likewise, as a competitive sport, the training process in taekwondo often requires a high level of concentration from the participants. Physical training and sparring matches help children develop the quality of resilience.

Upon entering the gym, instructors teach children to follow the training rules and acclimatize them to team life through team training, which is helpful in improving the adaptability of especially young children. Through warm-ups, matches and team interaction, the children's sense of competition and team spirit is enhanced and friendships are formed in the process.

Coach Christopher Chong's former students are now leaders in their profession, including Ivy League students, members of the RCMP, police and Canadian Forces.

What is courtesy, justice, patience and indomitable spirit? Come to JK Taekwondo and Instructor Chuang will give you and your child a satisfying answer.
